Basketball: OLA Saints

On Wednesday afternoon, the OLA Saints played the Sacred Heart Celtics in the Year 5/6 A Grade Final at Pioneer. The game was nail biting and showed immense skills from both schools. Unfortunately OLA were runners-up to a superior Sacred Heart team. The final score was 17-16.
Well done to OLA Saints for a fantastic season and maybe next year.
OLA Saints - Hunter R absent

A bit of fun: I don't know what Jamie is doing

Fitness: Athletics

In the Year 5/6 team, the children do fitness at 9:30 to 9:45 every morning. Currently in our fitness programme the children are working through three stations.
The stations are
1. High Jump - learning to use the scissor jump on low hurdles
2. Running - learning how to run and increase speed. Also learning how to do relays and use the batons.
3. Long Jump - learning to jump from 1 foot to 2 feet.

Here are some photos of the children completing their fitness.

Someone knocks down the bar when jumping.

Reading: "Why I Hate School" by Michael Fartarsky

We are reading the novel "Why I Hate School". Here is some of my work.

7 Reasons Why I Hate School:

 - having to do work
 - when the teacher puts embarassing things on the blog
 - I hate maths
 - I hate the uniforms and wish we could wear mufti
 - I wish there were no boys at school
 - I hate the seating arrangement and I wish we could pick where we sit.

In Michael's list of dislikes about teachers are there any that stand out to you?

I hate when teachers think they know what's best for everyone else. How can they know that? If everyone wants to pick their own paretners when they should be allowed to.

What partner would you work with? Explain why.

I would work with Ellie because
 - she is awesome
 - we work well together
 - we don't talk off task

Narrative Writing: Molly

It was a rainy day outside and I just turned the corner into my house. I rushed inside and found my Mum watching TV. I came and sat down beside her.
“How was your day?” My Mum asked as she walked off to the kitchen to prepare afternoon tea.
“Okay,” I shout after her. Suddenly I hear my Mum’s cell phone ring. I run over to see who it’s from.
“Oh no,” I think to myself as I read the text.
I hear Mum call from the kitchen, “Who was that?”
“Would you like to see it? It’s from one of your friends,” I say.
“Yes,” I hear my Mum say.
I run the phone over to her in the kitchen.

“Thank you darling. By the way, where is your portfolio?” asked Mum
I knew this was coming. I take my portfolio to her. She opens it up and her mouth drops open. I snatch the portfolio out of her hands and all I see ‘1, 1, 1, 1 and even more ‘1s’. My Mum screams at me. I run up to my bedroom and slam the door. I break down into tears and close my eyes and I wish I never had a Mum.

The next morning my eyes slowly open. I stumble down the stairs and the house feels cold and empty. I run up stairs to my Mum’s room. I could not hear anything coming from inside the room. I barge into the room, and look around. I see only a bed and furniture placed in its normal sports around the room.

“Everything is perfectly normal,” I say calmly to myself. I run over to the curtains and pull them oven. The bright morning sun bursts into the room. Suddenly, I hear noise coming from the kitchen. I slowly walk towards the door. I quietly make my way down the hallway and then down the stairs. Then I hear a gentle meow and realized it was only my cat. I burst into the kitchen and find my cat searching for food. “I wonder why Mum didn’t feed her.”

To be continued.

Be careful what you wish for...

One day a little kid called Tommy was watching t.v. when an unexpected advertisement appeared on screen. "The Wish of a Lifetime. Anything you could wish for. Buy at your local toy store."
"Mummy, could I have it please!" Tommy exclaimed.
"No, but why don't you buy it yourself," his mum replied.
"Good idea Mum." But Tommy didn't watch the rest of the ad. "But make sure you wish carefully, because this wish will last your whole life! Have fun."

Tommy bolted down the street and stopped at a small shack called Toy World. He walked in and strolled down the aisles until his eyes got caught on a little area with a sign saying 'Wish of a Lifetime.' Tommy rushed over and poured out his life savings. Tommy didn't care if he paid too much. He was so excited, he had an unforeseen accident.
"Oh bother, I wish I had some clean pants," cried Tommy. He hadn't noticed that the 'Wish of a Lifetime' crystal ball was beginning to glow. Poof! Suddenly the yellowy liquid vanished from Tommy's pants. He was relieved and then he noticed the  label 'Only good for one wish!'.
Tommy gasped and was upset. He learnt a valuable lesson in the end, that life is not perfect and accidents happen.

Religious Education: Week 6 -

What have we been doing in class?

Narrative Writing by Piper, Ellie and Emily

- A horror tale from Piper, Ellie and Emily

It is the night of my best friend’s 11th birthday party.  I am super excited.  Finally I get to her house and I see all of my other friends there.  First we decide to open all of her presents, then play some party games.

After a while it becomes night, so we go into Molly’s room and turn on her tv to watch a scary movie called ‘When a Stranger Calls’.

We get into our sleeping bags and we start the movie.  As the movie begins Molly’s mum walks into the room and tells us that she is going to sleep and that she doesn’t want us to wake her up during the night.

Halfway through the movie we get too scared so we turn off the tv. None of us are tired and it isn’t that late so we decide to go to the dairy and get some lollies for a midnight feast.  As we walk through the door we notice a tv on the wall of the dairy and the news reporter says “Breaking news, there is a murderer on the loose. Stay indoors unless it is an emergency and look all doors and windows.  Please comfort loved-ones and the elderly.”
Listening to the news reporter gave us the fright of our lives and we feel a chill rolling down our spines.  We forget about the lollies and sprint as fast as we can out the door.
We are running down the steps and take a quick glimpse behind us only to see the dairy owner coming for us.  As we are sprinting down the road, we recognise a graveyard that is close to Molly’s house and decide to take a shortcut through it. All of a sudden the footsteps behind us stop. We turn around to the sight of the dairy owner hanging from a tree with a rope around his neck...Dead. We are so scared at this point, there is no way out.

In the distance we see a blinding white light. We think it may be a way out so we run over to it but by our surprise it is a little girl in a white gown crying out blood and screaming,” HE’S A DEMON, RUN!!”

Physical Education: Athletics

Dear Parents,

Weekly Winter Sports has concluded for the the term. The past three weeks has not been ideal for sports and the children have been kept inside without the opportunity to participate in physical activity.
Firstly, I would like to let you know that we have begun out Athletics training for the end of term Athletics Day, weather permitting. The children are also doing athletic activities for fitness.
These activities for fitness are baton relays, high jump, shuttles and long jump.
In PE the children are learning the techniques and skills in the following disciplines: Shot Put, Discus, High Jump, Long Jump and Running (Sprints and Long Distance)

Note: Children are to keep Winter Sports Gear at home (tracksuit and rugby jerseys etc) as we may also have Catholic Tournament.

Caritas Unit: On a Level Playing Field

Today the children explored their first lesson of  'On a Level Playing Field.' The unit is about sportsmanship, fairness and equality.
The children brainstormed ideas about what it means to be fair. Room 3 had many great ideas such as it is equal opportunity, sharing, kindness, being respectful etc.
We talked about the role of the referee in sports and how it is their job to ensure the game is played fair. Although some decisions may be incorrect, human error occurs. Respect of the officials in charge is important.

The video below is Colin Croft from the West Indies playing New Zealand in cricket in 1980. He is called for a no ball, because his bowling stance are outside the popping crease. His reaction to the umpire is not sportsmanlike.
Although the referee has to officiate the games sometimes the players help him make his decision with some fantastic acting.
Soccer Fair Play: Player chooses to kick ball out than kick a goal in an unprotected net.

Term 3 Week 5

What we have done this week...

Religious Education: The children learnt about why we worship on Sunday and the importance of Christ's saving work. The children in Room 3 brainstormed the word 'liturgy'. One important aspect of our faith is knowing about Christ's saving work and also doing our part to share/be part off Christ's saving work.

Reading: We have continued to read our novels. The children should be bringing these home daily and are working with the teacher and buddies to complete activities. This week some of the children are working with a buddy to help enhance their CSI strategies especially 'I think that mean...' and 'I have a picture in my head...'. The children are working well.

Narrative Writing:  In the beginning of the week Room 3 explored two stories that were written last week. We focused on our editing and proofreading. We then wrote a story together about Mr A making a wish. The children used some fantastic language and were learning how to use speech marks. Great work this week.

Inquiry: Fair Play
The children started to explore the concept of fair play. The prime example this week was that of the Belarus shot putter being stripped of her gold medal due to drug use. Fair play? Athletes need to abide by the rules of competition and every person should be on a level playing field. We will continue to explore this topic next week.

Aus Zealand: Olympics

I found this article on the net and thought it was great to see.

An Australian newspaper has attempted to sugar-coat the nation's lacklustre performance at the London Olympics. Sydney paper the Daily Telegraph has cheekily combined the medal haul of both Australia and New Zealand which would have the fictitious sporting body sitting at ninth place on the medal tally. Australia has plummeted to number 24 on the medal board languishing below weaker nations such as Belarus, Denmark and Poland. New Zealand is currently at 14th place. The Aussies were hoping to achieve much success in the pool through numerous gold medals including the men's 4x100m freestyle relay, 100m freestyle and 50m freestyle. Unfortunately it didn't work out for them. Australia left the pool with only one gold medal — the women's 4x100 freestyle relay. New Zealand has had a spectacular outing so far. The Kiwis have reeled in three gold medals in the rowing and eye further golds through track and field athletes Valerie Adams and Nick Willis.
