Narrative Writing: Some highlights from Room 3's story writing

I had just splashed out on a new silver van. But had no idea what lay ahead.

I took the van for a test drive. When the radio man said "Newsflash: An elephant has just escaped from the zoo!" I snorted to myself "Who lets an elephant escape from a zoo?" At that precise moment the van flipped over. The last thing I saw was a huge gray creature charging away. "The elephant," I mumbled to myself. Then all went dark.

I woke an hour or so later in a bed. The pain was nothing I had ever felt before. It hurt from head to toe. I screamed "Owwwwwww!" I completely lost it. I screamed my heart out.

As I wake up in the morning feeling happy, I jump out of bed and I get dressed to go to a parade with the actors Pooh Bear. I see Pooh Bear and suddenly something catches the corner of my eye. I was Tigger the Tiger. I start to jump up and down. Just then I see other actors of Pooh Bear.

Today's the day, when I am going to attack great heights," I whispered to myself in bed. I get up and race downstairs to eat breakfast. I did not really eat it, I stuffed it in and yelled "Toodles Mum!" "Wait. Where are you going?" she said anxiously. But I was out the door. I was going to ride an elephant today.

By Megan

As I sat in the car waiting for my parents to finish the grocery shopping, I suddenly looked out of my window and saw a great big elephant. The car started shaking, it felt like it was an earthquake.

Suddenly I saw the elephant walking backwards, I was so happy. I looked down and at that moment the car was on its side. I tried to get out my door but it was on its side. So I tried to get out the other way but it was too steep. So I sat there and hoped my parents would be back soon.

I look out the window, my life flashed before my eyes. It was flooding around me. I get my dog and slowly walk outside. I see people drowning around me. I sprint inside to get my family mum, dad, Emma, Ellie and Piper. We climb up the wall onto the roof. I felt like I was Spiderman climbing up the wall. I helped my dog up, then I look around me people where drowning. “What was that?” I say. It was like a giant was shaking the house. It was an earthquake. The house was drowning. I hear “Help! Help!”

Great writing Brooke. I like how you have tried to explore your language to make it more descriptive. Well done.

Olympics Wall Display

The children have begun constructing their wall displays to show their learning and thinking for their sports in relation to the Olympics. Some children have a lot of information and are now needing to transfer this information in to their own words.
I appreciate all the printing that must be going on at home. I have spoken to the children about printing out Wikipedia and that they can skim read and take notes in their own words.

Here are some photos of the children putting their information on the wall.

Narrative Writing: Caleb S

The picture above was the motivation to write a narrative story. This is a story that Caleb has begun.

I was terrified, my load was lion. I was in for a bad day. I finished my annual check list. Then I turned on my engine to start my flight, the plane was rooted to the ground. I took a glimpse out my window and yelled something I will regret a second latter (literally). The lion took over the plan. I screamed my heart out. Then felt teeth sinking through.

The Day You Forgot To Feed Me!

I'm not one to complain but I keep the cats away, get the mail for you and even go toilet outside. So when I stroll over to my bowl and it's empty, I get upset. So I have decided to get revenge on you.
As you were painting the new babies room I sink my sharp white teeth in to the painting mat and pull as hard as I can, and you come down, down. But on my face.
When I wake up I'm in the vet and start to think I want to get revenge on someone my own size...the baby.

Responding to pictures

As I walked up the stairs into my bedroom a sign of happiness shot into me. Tomorrow was the day I moved into my new house. When I closed my eyes I just couldn't get to sleep because my dog Reggie kept barking. I finally got too sleep. At 8:00 I woke up. I quickly slipped into my clothes and raced to the car, where my mum, dad and dog were waiting. Then we drove off. We finally reached the new home. When we all went into one of the rooms, Reggie rushed to the mat that was under the painter and started pulling it. "OH NO" I yelled. At that moment the painter fell and made a hole in the wall. "Not another 5 weeks to wait" said mum.

Writing Homework: Responding to Music or Pictures

Homework due Wednesday 25th July.

Children need to write a narrative story responding to either the music or picture.

Narrative Writing Responding to Music

As he walks through the dark, gloomy forest he can hear the sound of dogs barking at the moon. Trying to walk even faster he could feel his feet shaking in his boots , the sound of trees crashing to the ground brought terrifying thoughts to his mind.

Narrative Writing Responding to Music

I shake with horror as I line up to get a ticket into the new rollercoaster 'The Midnight Ghost Ride'. It's meant to be the scariest ride ever created and 'I' am here on the opening night. I finally get into the rollercoaster but realise I've made the biggest mistake of my life, there are dogs howling, wild boars growling and thunder and lightening coming at me... There is no turning back now.
My stomach is twisting and turning with fear and just when I think this moment can't get any worse , it happens. Massive bars come down from who knows where , shutting us in and choking us by the stomach. I hear people crying behind me but when I turn around to try and calm them down I hear some old lady on a loud speaker say "I hope you like blood". But before I can even think buckets of red liquid come pouring down on us. This is the worst day ever!!

Olympics: Inspiring Moments

Today the Room 3 class watched snippets of  the documentary 'Salute'. Salute is an  Australian documentary exploring the 1968 Mexico City 200m Medal Ceremony, in which Tommie Smith and John Carlos raised their hand in the black power salute. With them on the podium was Australian Peter Norman.
This gesture was in relation to the lack of civil rights for African-American  and caused much controversy. Many thought the Americans were disrespecting the American flag. Peter Norman was also protesting for the civil rights of the Aboriginal people in Australia.
Tommie Smith ran the fastest 200m and broke the world record.
In an immediate response to their actions, Smith and Carlos were suspended from the U.S. team by IOC President Brundage and voluntarily moved from the Olympic Village.
Norman, who was sympathetic to his competitors' protest, was reprimanded by his country's Olympic authorities and ostracized by the Australian media. He was not picked for the 1972 Summer Olympics, despite finishing third in his trials. Smith and Carlos were pallbearers at his funeral after his death in 2006.

Narrative Writing: Responding to Music

This term the children will be learning about narrative writing and how they can use language to entice people to read their stories.

Currently, we have been listening to instrumental music to create a mood for our story. The music does not only create a mood but enable the children to imagine a setting.

Today we listened to an instrumental of a dark gloomy forest. The children are not given any hints about the instrumental, but are required to listen and write what they feel is happening.

Below are some of the children's ideas.

Hoper you enjoy.

I shake with horror as I line up to get a ticket in to the new roller-coaster ' The Midnight Ghost Ride'. It's meant to be the scariest ride ever create and 'I' am here on the opening night.
I finally get into the roller-coaster but realise I've made the biggest mistake of my life; there are dogs howling, wild boars growling and thunder and lightning coming at me... There is no turning back now.

Trembling with fear I tripped, unexpectedly the lights turned off. It was dark and black. Next thing I know I feel cold air trickling down my back as though someone was breathing on me. Holding my breath I run, and run and run. Until I hear something, something mysterious; footsteps coming towards me. I scream as loud as I can. Then I fall into a deep sleep.

By Alice C

Creeping down the hall with fear rushing down my spine as quickly as anyone could possibly imagine, floorboards creaking at the bottom of the stairs as I plucked up my courage to make my way to the bottom.
I hear bricks falling, dogs barking loudly and the sound of thunder and lightning. I reach the bottom of the stairs...

Term Three Maths

Kia Ora,
This term Room 3 are going to be learning a range of multiplication and division strategies.
We will be starting with multiplication strategies.

Above are six examples of the strategies we will be using in class.
The goal is for students to be confident at using a range of strategies, and to pick the best one for each problem.
I encourage you to ask your child what strategies they are learning, and have mastered over the next few weeks.

It is also very important for your child to be fluent in their times tables up to the 10X.
In order for them to learn and use new strategies they need to be able to recall their basic facts instantly. The more confident they are in their basic facts the more progress they will make this term. Please encourage them to learn their times tables at home.

If you have any questions please feel free to come and see me in Rm 3.

The Olympics

Term Three:

Welcome back to Term 3.
In the holiday's the children would have brought home their inquiry book with the sports they will be studying for the Olympics.
At the moment, I have talked to the children asking them to begin looking in the newspaper and watching the news to learn about the Olympics.

I have embedded the video of Derek Redmond from the 1992 Barcelona Games. The video is very inspirational and the children will need to learn about an inspiring event from either the present Olympics or past.

Hope you enjoy.
