Density Experiment

In Room 3 today we examined density and learnt about how some items can be less dense or more dense than water.

Firstly, we looked at 'What is density?'. After a brief discussion we realised that we knew nothing about density. So it was time to look at an experiment.

We began by looking at what materials we required. We had a container filled with water. Molly had used a bucket to fill up the large white container in our class. The other materials we used was a can of Coke and a can of Coke Zero. The cans were full and were both 355mL.

In our topic books we wrote our hypothesis and what we thought would happen. We then needed to conduct the experiment to see if our hypothesis was correct.

The next step we had to do was place each can in the container of water. From this point we needed to observe and record our results.
The container  filled with water.
Our experiment uses Coke and Coke Zero

Placing the can of Coke in the water. What is happening to the Coke can?

It sunk. Well, what will happen to the Coke Zero can then?

We then proceeded by placing the Coke Zero can in the container of water.

The Coke Zero can floated. How come?

We tested other cans as well to see what would sink and float.
After our experiments, we recorded our results in our topic books and wrote our conclusions.

Science Alive: Teamwork

Science Alive

Science Alive

On Thursday, the Year 5/6 classes had Science Alive visit us and by together we worked to solve a mystery. The Room 3 class began their 'Forensic Science' lesson first with John. John began by telling us a story about a Candy Shop with a missing recipe. He explained to the class about the various suspects and how the Room 3 children working in groups of five, would have to look at the evidence, conduct experiments and find the thief. The children first looked at comparing fingerprints and we had the statistics of the different types of fingerprints. The children used a magnifying glass to enhance the fingerprint. Also in the evidence container was a written note that had been wet causing the ink to run. John explained that separating colours is called Chromatography. The children separated the colour by filling a beaker with 50mL of water and holding a paper with various pen marks, just touching the water. Buster Simpson had written the note. By this time, all the children thought is was Buster, yet more experiments needed to be conducted. The children also tested chemical reactions and problem solving. All in all, the children had a lot of fun and got to see first hand how science experiments can be conducted. I would like to thank Kate (Emily's mum) and Mike (Madison's dad)who helped out with the Science Experiments. The children thoroughly enjoyed having another pair of hands in the class to assist. Thank you.

Anzac Day: We Will Remember Them, Lest We Forget

On Tuesday, Room 3 used this video to remember the importance of Anzac Day and those people who went overseas to fight for their country. We all have had family or friends who haver served in the military and it is an important day to acknowledge the work they have done in the past and present.

Thank you to all our Service people.

Enjoy the video of the NZ Army in World War 2.

Term Two Is Here

Greetings, I hope you have had a wonderful two week break. Room 3 deserved a good holiday after all the work they completed in Term 1. Well what is happening this term?

Firstly, we will begin to look at some science experiments and demonstrations for the children to get their creative juices flowing for their Science Project. More information will follow and this has changed slightly from last year and more user friendly for parents.

Secondly, this term in numeracy we will be looking at the strategies to solve addition and subtraction problems. It is important that your child learn the times table and to practise them. there are many good website to play maths games, but also the children do have access to Mathletics. I have talked to Room 3 children and said that if they go on Mathletics 20-30mins a night is sufficient. Practise makes Perfect.

The children will continue being tested in spelling in the morning. The children should be taking home their spelling books and frog lists each night. If they are not bringing home their spelling, please flick me an email.

Later this term, the children will begin weekly winter sports. This is an exciting time for the Yr 5 children who have not participated before. The children have chosen the sport they wish to play. They had the choice of netball, rugby, football, and hockey. Netball hover has changed to a 5-a-side quicker game, which some children have opted out. This will allow them to try another sport.

If I can think of anything else, I will post again. Other than that, see you on Monday.

Technology: Bridge Building

Last week, the children worked in groups to design a bridge that could hold at least 4 dictionaries and it had to be at least 30cm long. The children were given some paper to create the bridge and were limited with how much sellotape they could use. Before the children created their bridge, the groups did research on the different types of bridges. However the information learnt, was not used...

Here are some of the photos showing the children working in groups and testing their bridges.
Team work!
Applying ideas and giving a hand.
Using every person to achieve the best bridge.
Strategies: Rolling the newspaper?
Will the bridge work?
NO!
Success!

Terrific Tuesday

Today was Terrific Tuesday. Each class got a letter of the alphabet, Room 3 got the letter D. People in Room 3 dressed up as doors, dolls, dice, dudes, and Daniel Vettori. I dressed up as a doll.
After the roll, we all went out to the court and started the catwalk. When it was our turn we got in line and started to do the catwalk, the judges were the student council. When it was the teachers turn, Mr A shuffled. Then the student council called out the winners. The winners for our class were Finn Sul as Daniel Vettori and Alice C as Damaged. Great day
