In class, the children in Room 3 have been learning about 'The Life and Times of Jesus'. An important aspect of our learning was exploring and understanding how the New Testament is put together. The work above is done on three pages in the children's RE books. These have gone home this week and have been signed.

No Longer Strangers: Recognising Cultural Diversity

The children are exploring cultural diversity and in this topic the children will explore various proverbs from different countries. The aim is that the children will discover that, in many ways, people from different
backgrounds and cultures hold similar values and beliefs.

Parents have a try at home. These proverbs are jumbled up, see if you can find the corresponding proverb from the United States.

Swimming Sports

Yesterday we went to Jellie Park to do swimming sports.
First, we had to be split into are house colours. Then we were sorted into heats according to our age and gender for the freestyle and backstroke.
Afterwards we competed in the breaststroke and butterfly. Breastroke was 11years and under for both genders. Butterfly was a straight final with all age groups and genders.
I think everyone enjoyed the time there.
Everyone behaved and supported everyone. We all had a good time!

Enjoying the Swimming Sports!

Swimming Sports

The children had a very busy day and it began with the annual O.L.A Swimming Sports.
Firstly, the children were well organised for their events and their behaviour at the pool was absolutely outstanding. The children were very responsible and all of them ensured they had their event numbers on their hand. Well done Room 3.
Secondly, the children all tried their very best at swimming. I watched many of the races as I raced around checking events and so forth. I saw Finn Sull swimming fast against Josh K and catching up after being a few lengths behind. I also saw some children in Room 3 struggling in their races, however they never gave up and they completed their swim. Ka mau te wehi! Fantastic!
I will go through the events and let those who qualified for Zones know in the coming days.

February 22nd- Memorial Gathering

Today we remember the Christchurch Earthquake. It was a time in which all people came together to assist and help one another. So it is fitting that Hoon Hay School and Our Lady of the Assumption School come together with their communities to remember the people who had passed away in the disaster. It was led with students from both schools, finishing with planting a tree and releasing some balloons.
The children were very respectful and have shown to be very resilient a year on.

Room 3's New Classroom

Room 3 has been upgraded to a fancy white marquee.

On Monday the Year 5 and 6 children worked in the hall with Miss McDonald, Mr Shea and I. The children learnt some new information about our upcoming camp and also about the entertaining camp concert. The children brainstormed a few ideas and then practised with their groups. They will get together again before camp to ensure they put on any finishing touches. So far, the performances look spectacular.
Also in the hall, the children experienced a form of CantaMaths Problem Solving which Mr Shea organised. The children were divided in to groups of 4 and had to solve arrange of mathematical problems. Each group has 15 questions, in which they get 1 at a time. If they can not answer the question they can pass. Each group has 2 passes. The competition in Room 3 was very close with 2 groups tied for 1st and 2 groups tied for 2nd. A key component to success in CantaMaths is teamwork and listening.

On Tuesday, we moved into our new classroom. Although we will have another picture with our TENT. Here is a view if you have not already seen it.

Teamwork: No Longer Strangers

The children in Room 3 explored the story of the Good Samaritan and also about how we communicate with one another. The topic No Longer Strangers: Recognising Cultural Diversity, links closely with how we respect and work one another.

Some activities the children completed focused on the children trying to get as many people in to a hula hoop on the ground. Although it sounds simple, the children had to talk to one another and strategize how to get 10-12 people in to the hoop. The boys and girls won in different areas. The communication got better each time and the children began to watch one another and help.

I think that George Nepia would be  8 out of 10 because he was a really good rugby player but he wasn’t a 10 because not many people should risk their chances of going to college could ruin your future.

I think it was interesting and that it was a good inspirational biography especially for rugby lovers.`

Religious Education: The New Testament

In class the children are learning about the New Testament as their first lesson in the Jesus strand. Below is some information about the Gospels.

The first four books of the New Testament, Matthew, Mark, Luke.and John, are often called the four gospels. These books present a biography of the Life of Christ. They describe the details of His birth, His ministry, death, burial, and resurrection.

A. Matthew

Matthew seemed to be addressing the Jewish readers, and presented a strong emphasis on Jesus Christ as the Messiah predicted by the Old Testament prophets.

B. Mark

Mark seemed to have had Gentile readers in mind, and stressed the supernatural power of Jesus, demonstrating His divinity by the miracles He performed. This book emphasizes the things that Jesus said by the things which He did.

C. Luke

Luke presented Jesus as the Son of God, but turned his attention especially to the humanity of Jesus, featuring His compassion for the weak, the suffering, and the outcast.

D. John

No Longer Strangers: The Good Samritan

How did the Samaritan go the 'extra mile' for the injured man?

Instead of just asking if he was 'ok'. The Samaritan helped him up, took him to an inn and paid the innkeeper to look after him. (Piper)

He went the extra mile by taking him to the inn and not just leaving him. He paid two gold coins to the innkeeper to care for him even though he was a stranger. Also he fixed his wounds and bandaged them, as well as putting the injured man on his donkey. (Emma)

Our Literacy Programme

At the end of last week Room 3 started to explore writing our autobiographies. We looked at a biography of Martin Luther King Jr to see what information we find in a biography.
The children then created a mind map in their writing book about themselves. The information included in their mind map was

• birth date
• siblings
• parents
• school
• significant events in their life (broken arms, holidays)
• achievements

Once this was complete the children placed their information in to a timeline. We are now editing some time lines as they were not in chronological order!

Also the children created a family tree to assist with their biography.
Currently we have not started to write our biography as we want to explore some other examples. In writing today the children received a cut up biography of Barack Obama and they had to put it in order. This was a difficult task and the best group only got 2 wrong.

In our reading programme we have begun to use CSI on the biographies of famous New Zealanders. The children are unsure of who these people were but hopefully through some deeper meaning in their reading they can learn about these inspirational figures. This week the children are reading about

• David Lange
• Peter Fraser
• George Nepia 

Hopefully they will come home and share with you some information about these famous New Zealanders.

No Longer Strangers - Recognising our Cultural Difference

Today in class the children designed a title page for our topic this term 'No Longer Strangers'. This topic is one of the Caritas topics we will be exploring this year.
The children will learn about

• Friendships
• Building relationships
• Exploring who we are and the people that make up our society.

As we began to look at the topic we talked about who we are and how we fit into the classroom. In Room 3 we have a few people born in the United Kingdom and one person born in Australia. Not only that we have many people who have grandparents that have come over to New Zealand to live and raise their families.

This topic links closely to R.E. as well as Social Studies and Health.

My Trip to Mt Thomas

In the Christmas holidays the Andrews and my family went to Mt Thomas. Mt Thomas is close to Ashley Gorge, so we spent most of our time there because it was so hot!

When Lucy and I hoped in the water we froze, the water was freezing. We started to swim over to the other side of the river. When we got to the other side, I felt something slimy go across my foot.

The next day Jackson [my step brother] was looking under the water and he found an eel’s nest. I got a bit frightened, so I got out of the water .When we got back to the camp site we packed up and got ready for the long trip home

I had an awesome time at Mt Thomas. I hope we can go back.

Recount Writing: Holiday Recounts

This week the children began writing recounts about there holidays. The children have also typed there stories up and they will be displayed on the classroom blog. These are the children's first recount in 2012.

We are learning to write using the correct structure and using technical vocabulary.

Reefton Road trip

In the holidays my family and I went to Reefton (on the West Coast). The scenery was nice on the way there. We went there for Christmas and I got an iPod Touch.

We met up with my cousin and my grandparents in Reefton. We went fishing and we saw a couple of wekas in the bush. A couple of days later we went eeling at my cousin’s house. She has a 1km driveway, it’s all gravel and dirt. She has a river next to her house with a lot of eels. We went eeling with the rods that we bought last time we went here. All the eels we caught we put back.

We also went to Greymouth and we got to go to the Aqua Centre. The lane pool was very deep at one end it was about 3m deep. We came back to Christchurch and my sister and I went to the movies and saw the adventures of Tin Tin in 3D. We think there’s going to be a number 2.

I enjoyed my holiday in Reefton.

Minefield: Learning about TEAMWORK

The children participated in the activity 'Minefield'. Minefield is an activity that teaches children to listen to their partner as they direct them through a series of obstacles while blindfolded.
The obstacles in front of the children were many cones spread out as 'mines'. Each child had the opportunity to be the blinfolded person and the leader.

Some children were listening to their partners yelling 'Left, Left', while moving 'RIGHT'. Note to self: Teach children their left and right.
It was also funny seeing the children pulling and pushing their partners through the course. The task was to direct them using their voice and clear instructions.
Worst of all, was the leaders using hand signals to tell their blindfolded partner where to go. They can not see your hands.

Luke is very focused on ensuring William is dodging the mines.

To conclude the lesson, we finished having relays. Here are some of the photos from the races.

Class Guidelines

Today the children showed fabulous behaviour and worked together in groups to write our Room 3 Class Guidelines. Each child voiced their ideas in their groups and then shared the similarities with the class. The children had great ideas about being respectful and most importantly persevering in their school work.
